Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search Engine Optimization Advertising
The purpose of Search Engine Optimization is
to increase web visitor counts by ranking the highest possible in search results using the most appropriate keywords when describing the content of your site. Rather than a struggle to out-do your competition this relative ranking is often viewed as a struggle to best use a few keywords. When you search using your target keywords, you will see the leading site in the rankings. Your goal is to be better than that number one site
SEO Process
Search engine optimization (SEO) is process aimed at improving the ranking of a website in search engine listings, and could be considered a subset of search engine marketing.
SEO also refers to “search engine optimizers,”
an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients’ sites. Some commentators, and even some SEOs, break down methods used by practitioners into categories such as “white hat SEO” (methods generally approved by search engines, such as building content and improving site quality), or “black hat SEO” (tricks such as cloaking and spamdexing). White hatters charge that black hat methods are an attempt to manipulate search rankings unfairly. Black hatters counter that all SEO is an attempt to manipulate rankings, and that the particular methods one uses to rank well are irrelevant.
Making Viewer Usability – the objective of your site
When doing search engine optimization you need to keep the user in mind. First you design so that your site is user friendly, after that the search-bot. After all, the objective of the site is to sell a service or products and if the user finds the site difficult to navigate they will quickly hit the back button.
Of course without users you can’t sell products, but without the search-bot there other ways of getting traffic.
Guidelines for designing a user friendly site:
- Ask for user input
- When proofreading read your content aloud to see if sounds too keyword heavy. You may be thinking too much about the search engines, try adding some pronouns.
- Be careful not to abuse the title=““attribute on all your tags this can result in the title being shown in the tooltip on mouse-hover.
- Some SEO moves, such as clean URL’s make the site nicer and easier on the user.
Search Engine Optimization 101, (SEO)
Before you begin to SEO you must first make your website user friendly. By that I mean make sure each page is in compliance with search engine standards and is ready to be indexed correctly
Define your list of target keyword
When you are optimizing your website you are optimizing for target keywords. That is, you need to create a list specific keywords and phrases which are relevant to people looking for your product or service.
Simply put:
Firstly, will people find what they are searching for at your website? If not it’s a waste of time. If that’s the case, exactly what are the keywords they’ll be searching for? Once you have determined that, make a specific list of relevant words and phrases, these will be your target keywords.
Lastly, how competitive are your target keywords? That is, how many other websites are targeting these same keywords? You need to be realistic when it comes to targeting highly competitive keywords. It may even be in your best interest to target less popular keywords.
Architecture Design
When building a house you need to first build a strong foundation well the same principal applies when building web sites a strong foundation is crucial. For web sites the strongest foundation you can build on is xhtml and css (Cascading Stylesheets ). With xhtml/css you are able to separate content from layout, this has many advantages such as: both search engine and user friendly; easy to edit which makes it easier to maintain. All too often web site architecture is ignored by “SEO experts.” That is never the case at Zeus Design, we always consider fit, form, functionality and search relevance.
Title and Meta tags
All search engines use title tags to gather information about your Web site. What you put in this tag is a key factor in which search queries you will rank highly with in the major search engines. Title tags are definitely one of the “big three” as far as the algorithmic weight given to them; they are equally as important as your visible text copy and the links pointing to your pages.
While other meta tags may play a role in search engine optimization, Title and description are the two that demand the most attention. Use individualized title tags and descriptions for each page of your site that you want to optimize.
Content is king!
After architecture and design content is the most important aspect of the optimization process since this is the reason a user will visit your site. Not only does your content need to be relevant, your pages must be easily accessible to your visitor. If you begin with the premise that the search engine is a visitor and you use CSS for layout this is what CSS can do for your content: They have higher search engine ranking because they contain a far greater content to code ratio than table-driven ones making it easier for search engine spiders to access page content. They download faster than table-driven pages; they also have better accessibility and cross browser compatibility making your pages usable on a broad variety of web devices.
